Jacket sleeve buttons - how many rule - Page 3

Bumping an old thread.

How many buttons would you expect to see on a vintage (1960s) Harris Tweed jacket? I have been given my father-in-law's hand-me-down and the jacket is in fantastic condition and fits like a glove everywhere except the sleeves which he had shortened. I'm in the process of lengthening the sleeves 1.5" (to their original length, I suspect) so there will be room for more buttons or should I leave with just the one? Many thanks!

I'm afraid that there is no hard and fast norm for this type of coat: One is not unusual. When they are lengthened there may be evidence in the cloth as to how many there were, maybe not. However if you are increasing you will need to fit a full set of new buttons.
