American Express Credit Card?

I noticed a lot of guys on here say they use or always use (prefer) their Amex over other CC such as Visa or MasterCard. Any reason why? I guess I always thought of Amex as a lesser than Visa

Amex is definitely not 'lesser' than visa and a lot of their appeal is that they're more exclusive, because the implication is that amex users are typically higher spenders earning more income than the average person.

But beyond the prestige factor, Amex has excellent customer service. If you dispute a charge, it will almost always rule in your favor. Electronics purchased on an amex will have an additional year of warranty added on top of the manufacturer's warranty. If you can't return an item for any reason, they'll reimburse you for it up to $300, I think.

In terms of the different cards, each one has different annual fees. Unless you actually spend a lot of money, accumulate points, and use their concierge services and whatnot, they probably aren't worth the fees.

Companies also tend to use Amex for corporate credit cards.

I have the zync card and pay an annual fee of 25 bucks and strictly use it for electronics purchases or when I buy something that I may anticipate having to return. Otherwise I use my Fidelity Visa card to get 1.5 points per purchase and get cash rewards deposited in my brokerage account. To me, the higher tier Amex cards don't make sense.

i feel like most working ppl spend more than 3500 a year in which case blue is the best card out there

oops thanks for the correction. i also didnt realize blue had an artificially low credit limit? i guess that happens when you spend the bare minimum?

no i said in which case, blue is the best card

chase freedom and discover is i would argue the best non amex cards out there. citi forward is good too

considering this is an amex thread blue would mean amex blue? also i've never heard chase freedom called chase blue as all their cards are blue colored (or at least a bunch of them are)

I absolutely agree on this. I believe Amex has been the #1 credit card company for quite some time now because of their customer service.

 

I also love Amex's True Earnings (Costco) cash back credit card. Free membership to Costco, no annual fee and of course, cash back icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gifAs for the charge card, I love the Platinum as well. Their concierge can be hit or miss though.

 

On the other hand, Amex sometimes will ask for card holder's tax returns, as known as "financial review". If you don't comply with Amex when you are under financial review, they will cancel your account.

Amex sends lots of esoteric useless gifts once you get to a certain level. I guess they figure once you can afford to buy the things you want, they'll just send you stuff no one in the free world actually needs. I need to dig it out but we have a black marble projector kaleidoscope in an exotic wood box. Looks like a monolithic dildo, which is fitting, I guess.

amex website is better - shows more details about charges, automated charge summary. better consumer protection ... goes hand in hand with service

chase sapphire preferred is good too. but amex plat is my go-to

I switched to Amex recently just to have access to a wider variety of airline and related rewards. I must say, the service is pretty remarkable.

I like my starwood amex card

I haven't really used much in the way of the rewards yet...but I've got a ton saved up. I tend to prefer the amex website to dealing with my visa card through some shitty bank's website but lets not forget that Visa/MC offer a lot of the same perks as amex on many of their cards (purchase protection, warranties, car/travel insurance, etc).

It is also true that they won't take my amex everywhere...not a huge problem usually but it happens more than I would like (which is odd since any visa or mc with cash back or rewards actually costs more to process than amex...and who uses cards without rewards?)

Amex service is good though...I haven't had to use them much (since nothing has gone wrong) but I also haven't had fucked up shit happen like having to spend an hour on the phone with the issuing bank for my visa while standing in a store trying to buy something since they thought it was odd that I was using my credit card to make a $150 purchase at a liquor store in chicago (at that point I had lived here for 5 years and made many large purchases at liquor stores although my billing address was out of state).

SPG is really nice from what I heard

 

Forgot to mention. Last year and this year, Amex did the promotion for Small Business Saturday, which they give you $25 credit back when you spend $25 or more at small businesses that accept Amex. This year was just for one day (November 26), while last year was good for a month if I remember correctly. Hopefully Amex will do Small Business Saturday again next year!
