"Dress" Jeans for the Office

So, my future employer is a very casual place and people often wear jeans to the office. Can anyone recommend a good set of dark jeans that can we worn with a dress shirt tucked in, leather shoes, and a sport-coat for around $100? I would ask this on the streetwear and denim side, but I'm going for just about the most formal and classic look that you can do with jeans.

I should specify that I'm tall and a normal weight for my height (not stocky, not thin, slender build).

IMO you can't go wrong with a pair of Levi's 501s in say Rinsed Indigo or Tidal Blue. I'm no expert, but I see spending $100 on a pair of jeans a bit of a waste. It's an "in-between" point, where you don't get good quality raw denim, but you're spending too much for regular denim. Hence, buy 2 pairs of 501s, or up your budget a bit.

As a above, Levi's 501 is a good start.

Have you have considering cotton trousers (even cotton/wool mix), looks smarter then jeans and goes better with a 'dress' shirt?
Personally, I would go with chinos and button-down shirts; however, if you already have enough shirts then wear cotton trousers.

Oh, I'll be wearing plenty of regular slacks. However, my office has "jean days" and it would be kind of strange not to participate in those.

Are the 501s comfortable? I don't really like the whole stiff denim thing.

Even though the overall aesthetic of SW&D isn't quite right for the office, the collective denim knowledge over there is quite extensive. You would probably be better off asking them. That aside, Naked & Famous Weird Guys may work for you. Check Mr. K's latest fit in the Casual thread for what they look like washed.

They start off a little stiff. They wear in very well. Mine currently feel like they are made of flannel, after 5 years of regular wear. I would happily swap them for my pyjamas in fact.

Weird Guys have a very low rise, which makes it tough to tuck in a shirt, if that's your aim.

APCs - either the NS or the Rescues, or look at Tellason or 3Sixteens -.good denim without any stupid pocket stitching. Sizing can be a little tricky, but there is a ton of info on that in SWD.

Once you figure out your correct size, you can get them new on FleaBay for less than 1/2 price.

While I usually go for lee regulars (fit better on me, and I like that the back pockets are positioned higher than on levis), I've had the same experience with broken in denim. And as a matter of fact, I have slept in 'em, on various occasions, for various reasons.

But you don't need to buy raw. SW&D types prefer it because, managed right, it can create really high contrast and defined creasing, which is the current fashion. I find it somewhat artificial, and don't go to the sweat stained extremes they do for the look. If you're not particularly attached to the high contrast stuff, dark washed denim is fine, or a rinse. Just don't ever get something pre distressed or heavily stonewashed, which wears the jean in a way that looks nowhere near natural.

Also, don't sweat it when your jeans lighten in the wash over time. You start with dark jeans, and you end up with lighter jeans with natural wear patterns that add the texture that makes jeans great.

Levi's sells something called 2nd hand or a similar name. They are very broken in.

Turn the pants inside out when you wash them if you're trying to minimize fading.
