How thick should Mother-of-pearl collar stays be?

Thinner ones (upto 1.5 mm) tend to break fast. Thicker would be too thick for the collar. What is the ideal thickness?

Why not just use plastic?

I don't know how thick, but I purchased 10 pair for this guy on ebay, thinking they would break so I purchased multiple pairs. None have broken and I think I got all 10 pair for less than $100.

Can someone explain the utility of MOP (or silver, etc) stays to me? Even at $10 a pop, I just can't grasp it. They're literally unnoticeable 99.9% of the time, and you handle them for like five seconds at a time when you do actually see them. Even nice brass stays are a tiny fraction of the price and have exactly the same function. And they aren't going to break.

Distributes the pressure of a garotte wire evenly over a wider surface area.

They certainly aren't necessary, but I love mine that I got for $3 a pop here:

Great quality and finishing, it just takes a lloonnngg time for order completion and delivery. Mine took about two months from when I placed the order until they arrived. I was really happy with them though and placed another order to give away as stocking stuffers.

Forgetting stays in the shirt and putting them in the washer is a mistake I make too often. Plastic ones would either bend or break.

Then moved to steel, which is pretty cheap. Same across a deal few days ago, whereby, 2 pairs were for $4 or something like that.

Will find an post a link.

Curious reading led me to MOP. Ordered a few on ebay. For some reason, they tend to give the collar a slightly better feel compared to plastic or steel. May be the weight.

Was unhappy that they broke fast. Hence this thread.

Edit:

Found the link. It's actually $3 for 2 pairs now.

cogito ergo sum, the thread only exists because it is needed.

MoP is good for a few reasons:

- The light colour wont show through even on white shirts. Brass ones occasionally do.
- The softness of MoP gives a touch more flexibility than Steel
- The OCD in people says that buttons and stays should match

In terms of thickness, you're kind of stuck; if you can't make them thicker because they wont fit in your shirt, then you just have to treat them less roughly.

My experience is that MOP stays have more cons than pros. They look amazing (when they are not in your collar, that is...), but they are not practical. Many people mention the stiffness as a merit, but I think it's actually a drawback as the collar stays are clearly visible (i.e. bulge) instead of blending in.

My opinion is that anyone who says otherwise is just trying to justify the purchase of MOP stays because they are "cool."

I have yet to try metal collar stays but I'm guessing that metal would be ideal.

Yes rly. Have you ever tried to bend one? They have a degree of flex. I personally opt of Stainless Steel or silver, but I'm not fussy.

Steel on 0.7 or 0.8 mm will be ideal. Any thicker makes shaping difficult.

Reasons:

1. Steel is flexible as compared to MOP. The flexibility allows you to shape it based on your exact collar needs.

2. Does not lose shine, or react chemically or is harmful in any manner.  Unless you lose it, it lasts you a lifetime.

The link I mentioned above is 1mm thick, not very flexible, unless u r strong.

Yes I have and they bend like just like glass does.
(hint: they don't bend)

If broken mother-of-pearl stays are of interest to you. Look closer. They are all of 1.5mm thickness. Some even more.
