Burgundy Sport Coat

This is my first post on this board - I hope this is an appropriate question.

I recently purchased a burgundy sport coat. It's not at all special (JC Penny, Stafford). The question isn't really about the coat, but the color. After I purchased it a couple of family members gave me a hard time about the color. They said that the only people they know that wear burgundy sport coats are old men. I'm 27 - is a burgundy sport coat a no no?

I tried to add a picture to my post a few hours ago but it says that my edit requires moderator approval. Here's a picture that I found online that looks like my coat: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=390367040421

Do you wear sportcoats normally? If not, they may be reacting to the change as much as the color.

If it has gold buttons and a loose, boxy cut, that may be adding to the effect. A trip to the tailor might help.

While that color would not be my first choice, with jeans I think it would be fine and not old man-like, assuming the fit is correct.

Do not button the bottom button when you wear it.

The problem with burgundy is that, depending on the cut, you're running a real risk of looking like the manager at a movie theatre.

I have a burgundy sport coat that works well for me (I'm 28). But:

- It's corduroy, which keeps it casual

- It's a modern, fairly close cut, tailored fit

- It has black buttons

The coat you posted looks like a pretty full cut, and those buttons definitely seem inappropriate.

Try posting a picture of you wearing it how you were wearing it when you showed it to your family.

My guess is that if you get it tailored (assuming it already fits you in the shoulders and overall length), and swap those buttons for black or brown, it'll look much more age appropriate.

Not a fan.

I actually sort of like the color but would definitely take it to the tailor to at least switch out the buttons to black, a tortoise shell pattern, or just something not bright and shiny (not to mention any alterations that should be done).
