So I went out today

Thread Starter
I was wearing ferragamo chukka boots, apc jeans, Hamilton shirt, rl jacket...very nicely put together in my opinion, and a friend of mine questioned whether this was what this i was going to pick up chicks wearing, he had on an express sweater, shoes from Aldo that tilt up in the front end, and some abominable jeans, however, his look apparently fit.in with most of the people at the clubs, some.random guy complimented on his express sweater, most of the crowd probably didn't even know what raw denim was. it just made me realize how unfashionable people in Houston, TX are. do I have to live in NYC or la to get recognition? a girlfriend of mine who used to work for neimams compliments me on the way I look, but most girls out there in clubs seem to appreciate trash and generic mall brands more so than somewhat higher end clothing. just imagine you people who wear the real high end stuff. its frustrating, because its not so.much that people don't recognize it, but they think it looks like bad fashion, because theyve never seen it before.
I just had to vent...and I'm definitely moving to Manhattan, either that or.just buy cheap mall brand crap and look like a douche

Clubs - Dark, Alcohol fuelled, sensory overload. They are bad decision factories designed to confuse the mind.

Your clothes should always match the music played. If you're in a bar with lounge music and a proper bar tender then a smart jacket and trousers will go down well. If you're in a club where the DJ is wearing a baseball cap and playing D'n'B, House etc, you wont got very far unless you dress for that venue.

So either dress like a douche, or don't go to douche-gatherings.

Wait let me get this straight. You dress up and wear fine clothing not because you enjoy it but because you need the constant validation from strangers.

Just accept that some people will never acquire a refined taste and just wear whatever you enjoy. Anyway, if I really must say it's less of they think it's bad style it's more of them being intimidated. Sharply dressed people normally come across as intimidating.

Keep dressing the way you feel most comfortable in, if there's one chick in that place that's worth your attention you'll probably hook up. Do you really want to hook up with girls who like the style that you percieve av douche-y? I mean, even if it's casual, it's not worth it imho.

Agree.

Yesterday I went out with some friends to a place we used to go when we were students few years ago. I'm glad I decided to undust my Chuck Taylor sneakers and put on a pair of jeans. Not only because I did want to mingle (or at least not stand out), but because after some beers a friend of mine accidentally spilled all his beer over my jeans and sneakers. I don't even want to imagine how I could have reacted if I had worn the HY trousers and the Tricker's suede shoes I wore the entire day.

But I also agree in general with OP, most young (under 35) people outside few small circles dress awful. And it's quite frustrating having to justify yourself because your friends always tell you that you're overdressed just because I don't wear jeans, t-shirts and sneakers.

To play devil's advocate, yes. Otherwise, why not simply wear the baggiest and most comfortable clothes available to you? Obviously there is some image or perception you wish to create about yourself in your choice of attire. Since I can assume you know yourself, then it follows that this image is a projection intended for the others around you.

so you are associating more expensive brands with automatic "fashion" even though they also make very ugly clothing.

If you want SF's approval, dress in what SF likes. If you want your gran's approval, dress in what your gran likes. If you want club girls' approval, dress in what club girls like. There's no one right answer.

I thought that our assumption is that all those lines intersect in an Italian 4x1 DB suit?

Well actually, if you're good looking and got great charisma you can have it all. I guess that a guy like LabelKing has no problems in any of these departments.

NYC & LA are the same stuff on a different day.

Find out where her friends go. These may be they type of women you should surround yourself with. Classy, the kind of women that get drunk off wine satisfied.gif

Just as the bulk of the guys going to the club are dressed this way, most of the girls going there will be ones who seek out or are at least attracted to this particular "look."

It's unfortunate, but true. You'd be hard-pressed to see an elegant, classically dressed woman at this sort of club.

Nightclubs simply aren't the sorts of places to go if you want to see people with good taste, or dress in accordance with your own.

Depending on the atmosphere of the club, you woud probably fare better in Manhattan, but the club scene is not necessarily a good indicator of how stylish people dress.

It could also be, seeing as it was a girl who complimented your friend on his sweater, that she just thought he looked good in it.

Most people aren't as detail-oriented when it comes to clothing for the opposite sex.

Not many men, regardless of how much attention they pay to their own wardrobe, will be able to tell the difference at a glance between specific women's items and brands.

When evaluating attractiveness, there are other elements that come first, and an unsettling percentage of people hardly consider clothing at all unless the fit makes them look twice.

Judging by the description you gave for what you wore today, it would make sense that the woman who worked Neiman Marcus appreciated your style.

Wearing that outfit to this kind of club, though, creates a sort of aesthetic dissonance.

Certain clubs attract douchey guys who dress especially douchily because it puts them at an advantage when they're trying to attract their female counterparts.

I'm sure there are well-dressed people in Houston, I'm just not sure this is the right place to look.
