Some of the issues apply more directly to disaster relief aid, but most charities will do more good with money than with material donations. Donating material goods creates additional logistical difficulties and increases overhead expenses (transportation, warehousing, accumulation of unneeded items, &c.). Charities can use monetary donations in the most efficient and effective manner, acquiring needed goods through existing supply and distribution chains.
tl;dr - Donate money, not stuff.
