Overcoat with no buttons on the cuffs - Dealbreaker?

Question: How important is it to have buttons on your sleeve cuffs on a 3/4 overcoat to be worn with a suit?  Classic navy overcoat with single vent, and hacking pockets made by reputable English gentleman's clothing establishment.  If there are no buttons does it make the coat less formal?  Considering this is fairly expensive coat, would you pay 33% more for a made to measure overcoat from Saville Row with the buttons, or buy this off the rack with alterations, but without the buttons?  Thoughts, observations, opinions and advice welcome.

RTW suit jackets often come with the buttons unattached so that your tailor can sew them on after adjusting the sleeve length. I've never seen this on an overcoat but could that be the case?

You'd have to replace all of the buttons to get them to match but it could definitely be worth it if you really like the coat otherwise.

They're not necessary and in fact I will never have them on any of my coats.I prefer clean lines not useless decorations like a belt on the back of women's clothes that you see sometimes that serves no purpose.

This overcoat will not accomodate buttons as the sleeves will not have enough fabric when they are opened.  I dont feel inclined to have decorative buttons put on if there is no seam and they have bo function.  All my suit jackets, sports coats and blazers have working buttons on the sleeves.  So the question is...working buttons for $1,200 on a bespoke or go for the tailored OTR.

IMHO working buttons on overcoat sleeves are not very useful. If you really want buttons on your sleeves, can't you just have the tailor sew some on with the cuffs sewn shut?

I don't think I've ever used the buttons on either coat I've owned, they haven't served much purpose for me.

The only buttons I've ever had on the sleeves of an overcoat is when it's got those adjustable storm straps, so one can tighten them up to keep chills out. I think anything else, like what one sees on blazer or suit jacket sleeves, is purely decorative.

FWIW, my 1930s vintage J Press Chesterfield has no buttons on the sleeves, and it's a very formal coat.

I have working cuff buttons on one coat. It's idiotic. If it's cold the little gaps are just one more place the wind will get in.

Oh and you said it had hacking pockets. The working cuffs aren't going to make it more formal.

it's an overcoat, who cares if it has buttons on the sleeves... oh and to the OP, having working buttons on a suit jacket or sport coat has nothing to do with its quality nor it implies it's better...
