JCrew: Slim or Thinsulate

Thread Starter

New poster on StyleForum. Hope you can help me.

Looking for classic black topcoat, to be worn both casually and over a suit. After trying on a couple, the JCrew Mayfair is the best one so far.

My question is whether to get the Slim Fit or the Thinsulate Regular Fit for added warmth. The slim fits me better, will it be warm enough? Winter in NYC and New England, so 25-50F degrees. JCrew customer service has no recommendation for temperature for either version.

I've searched the SF archives and the web, and there does not appear to be a consensus.  Does anybody have experience with either coat?  Does anybody have any recommendations for another similar black topcoat that would be both slim and warm?

Thanks for your help.

in NY or New England you will freeze your ass off... would definitely go with the Thinsulate one

I would suggest staying away altogether. I had a similar coat from J. Crew that started pilling and looking nasty midway through the first winter. I took it back and then snagged one from BB on sale and am quite happy.

can't comment on the quality of those coats...
I have a vintage Navy Peacoat in Kersey Wool from 1968. That thing is heavy and thick (ie wind/water proof) and with minimal tailoring fits perfectly. Finally and most importantly it will be around long after I'm gone...
you can probably get one of those for $ 100.00 or less at vintagetrend.com
I highly recommend them...

I can't and will not comment on the quality of this item...but I would suggest to look for Navy or Charcoal instead....good luck!
