My sisters grew up there. They played with each other in French, spoke to my mother in Portuguese, and my father in English. I was unlucky in my family. I grew up in...New Jersey.

i also lived in nj for 2 years, but the only good town there is in the state (of course).

Disintegration Loop 1.1 consists of one static shot of lower Manhattan billowing smoke during the last hour of daylight on September 11th, 2001, set to the decaying pastoral tape loop Basinski had recorded in August, 2001. Shot from Basinski's roof in Williamsburg Brooklyn, this is an actual documentary of how he and his neighbors witnessed the end of that fateful day.

Basinski's The Disintegration Loops had its genesis in the physical process of decay. In the midst of archiving and digitizing analog tapes from the early 1980s, the composer realized that his material was literally disintegrating, leaving eerily silent passages in the midst of lush, pastoral music — "my paradise lost," he says.

The rest of the 4 part set is similar, of course with different loops "disintegrating" in unique ways.

In looking up stuff to make this post, I found out that it was performed live on September 11th, 2011 at the Temple of Dendur, and I missed it

This set of 4 records, as well as much of Basinski's other work, had a huge impact on me in the end of high school. Where Brian Eno felt contrived and artificial, Basinski's recordings connected to me in a way that I hadn't experienced since Boards of Canada released Geogaddi. The pairing of d|p 1.1 with the static shot of the smoke was something I searched long and hard for, as it was a limited release on VHS. The advent and rise of popularity of YouTube sorted that out though, and now it can be experienced by everyone.
