A Scorsese movie from the 80s without big macho tough guys killing others and where women have significant roles? I dug it. The protagonist and the setting make the movie, IMO. It´s all about him in the "wretched" and dirty New York streets, the unusual characters he finds, one after the other, each with their misery or just plain (dull?) existance in a city too big to shine. I´m not saying that´s the message, but I somehow got that from the film. I think what I most liked is thinking a peson, in a small way, could find himself in a situation like that, obviously not to those extremes, but cities like that at night (and my mind takes me to wondering around Buenos Aires at late hours) turn into a whole different thing.
