Maintaining Red Wings (Leather Boots in General)

Thread Starter
I have a pair of IRs in Amber Harness.I read through a few threads about Red Wing Care and Obenauf's LP -- This is what I got out of it.

I have to first scrub with a horsehair brush to get all the dirt off. Scrub with saddlesoap next (is this just like washing with regular soap + water?) And then apply one or two thin coats of the LP. Is that right?

I hear a few people talking about creams, oils and polishes. How do these fit in with whole maintenance routine, if they do at all?

Also would I go through the same process to treat a pair of Clark's DBs? I don't mind scuffs or anything I just don't like the dried out, dull look of my DBs.

Seriously, just wear them. Red Wings are work boots first, and fashion items second. They are rugged and can take abuse. No one has had a pair of Red Wings fall apart just by doing some light walking.

If you really want to do something fancy just watch some youtube videos on how to polish boots. That is pretty much all the maintenance you will need to do if you choose to go that route.

There's no need to use saddle soap or lotion/paste more than once per year...  Treat them like raw denim, just wear as hard as you can and delay cleaning/maintenance as long as you can tolerate.

And then brush them off, and slap some boot oil on 'em. And wear 'em for a while more.

You can beat them up if you want, and they can definitely take it. But I like to care for my Beckmans. I brush them clean, saddle soap occasionally (as needed, usually a couple times a year), and apply Obenauf's LP regularly. Once the LP has soaked in, I wipe off the excess, then buff with a cloth. You don't want a glossy shine, though.
