I'm not either, I just mean living in the sense of being fully responsible for oneself, experiencing the working world, being exposed to risk, hard choices etc... obviously there's lots of people in professional school who do that, but there's lots of career academics too, drifting down their school's preordained path, that couldn't even balance a monthly budget for themselves. I know I was pretty naive when I was in law school, though not as bad as a gf in med school who hadn't paid a single bill her entire life, lol.

Career academics have to pay bills, budget, save money, invest, etc etc just like everyone else. Just because they aren't playing the same game as people in business careers doesn't mean it isn't "real life."

It can be a little different for people who are going to grad school on debt, but most grad students are getting paid at least a decent amount and have to do pay rent and all that other fun stuff.

not sure which PhD candidates don't have to pay rent...

Also not sure how someone can live without paying bills. Where is this magical land? I want to go there.
