When I make it to Peru I'll look into purchasing some Vicuna... I imagine it's a little cheaper there. Funny, last week I was in a little town called Vicuna in Valle Elqui, Chile. No fabric stores in sight...

Regardless, nice find. Best of luck OP.

That's because there is little to no demand for vicuna and the market has dried up. Even in Peru, you will probably only find some vintage vicuna and very little newly spun stuff.

Interestingly enough, I found out that the city I visited isn't named after the animal, rather it's the name of a Colonel.

Yeah, I kind of figured that may be the case, since Vicuna will be way beyond the budget of most Peruvians and Chileans... however in Lima airport they do have a store selling Vicuna. If I remember correctly (in February) scarves were around a grand USD. Even in Santiago airport, intl terminal, they sell vicuna sweaters/scarves and they even have a sample fabric area where you can feel the difference between vicuna, high quality alpaca, etc. Vicuna is something special.

I also have a feeling that even in Peru it will be very difficult to get genuine Vicuna. I'm sure there are plenty of vendors out there selling vicuna that really is alpaca or only a small percentage of real vicuna. High quality alpaca is also really quite nice.
