What do you use as bookmarks? I'd like to have something interesting and distinctive, not too thick so as to not damage the book, but also nothing that is too precious, that I would not bat an eye if it were to be lost.

Random scraps of paper, miscellaneous business cards I find lying around.

Stupid suggestion, but what about a roll of really, really nice ribbon? I'm in the miscellaneous scraps crowd the few times I use a bookmark. ~ Huntsman

I find old concert tickets work really well. They're fairly stiff, long enough they won't fall out easily, and are nice reminder of an event. Alternatively I use MTA cards from NYC Public transit. Same idea, just more compact.

Very good ideas here. Ribbon is a bit flimsy; I prefer a stiff bookmark.

My favorite are used envelopes.

Uncashed cheques are also ideal.
