Recommend me a cool 2-door car for less than $10k

Cars tranny is about shot, so its time to start car research. My criteria is
  • Daily Driver
  • USED
  • 2-3 doors
  • preferably 8-10k range
  • less than 80k miles - i want a car I can keep for about 5 years at 12k miles/year
  • automatic
  • preferably more than 26 mpg
  • I dont care about performance and blowing past people, but want something that kinda turns heads.


I have been suggested:


Mazda RX8 (Looks AWESOME, but hate the idea of special "quirks" to that rotary engine)

Mini Cooper (Definetly cool, but still expensive and reliabililty issues)

Based on how few of your bullet points those listed vehicles meet, I'd like to add the BMW E30 M3 to your list.

Huh? Not a car guy so is that the usual SF snark or a serious reply? That car looks old as shit and they dont appear to be cheap.


Of course nothing is going to be perfect, but in terms of style and basic substance, the listed cars match most of the criteria. The only true deal breakers are being a used coupe for the right price.

I feel like the only ones in your price range would be an older RX8 or S2000. You aren't really going to find an MKV GTI for <13ish from what I've seen. Minis are still pretty pricey last time I checked.

*this poast could be totally wrong as I haven't car searched in about 6 months...


Edit:

S2000 is probably your best bet. The rotary engine isn't know for being economical. A GTI would be good if you could find one cheap enough though

Car shopping is so annoying.



06 Scion TC with 69k miles for $12k

-or-

05 Honda Civic with 84k miles for $7k

-or-

06 Mazda RX-8 with 65k miles for $10k

Of those three the honda would be it for me.

I'm currently looking for a new car and came up with the honda as well, but am going for a mg tf. Will probably get the girly snark for that here, but my set of demands for a car at the moment is quite a bit out of the ordinary.

Never heard of that car, looks pretty slick! The civic is just so damn....blah, IMO.


The more I look at the RX-8, the bigger my chubby gets. The only thing holding me back is the engine. Im reading the forums now...

I would never drive a civic, dont like the look of them. The s2000 would be a good car, reliable and nice looks. From what iknow about the wankel engine, a friend of mine owned one of the three rx-7's here in the netherlands and loved the car. Service however was a bitch, as there were at that time only two dealers that could work that engine, you can guess what happened with spare parts etc. It should be better now, but be warned. Also, i believe that its quite a thirsty engine, oil wise..

S2000 only comes as a 6-speed manual, no?

Hyundai Tibouron would not turn heads...older Porsche Boxster might do the trick. Some are going for super cheap right now, usually a decent inventory of automatics, but it's not a terribly practical car...

porsche boxster...yes. Now we're talking. Plenty of 1999's with 80-100k miles for under $10k. How are they reliability and maintenance wise?

Also, I dont give a crap about practical. No kids, just drive to work. Dont want to help people move shit and never have people in my backseat anyways.

davidko, drive a miata (mx-5), THAT will turn some heads laugh.gif

I doubt you can find one in your price range, but I kinda have a softspot for the funny looking 1st gen Z4.

Getting a bit long in the tooth, but there's also the Acura RX which can be found for DIRT cheap now. Hopped up and better looking civic...
