Meermin Mallorca Shoes

Long time reader, first time poster. I just received my first order from Meermin yesterday and I thought I would post some pics. For my first order, I got the dark brown calf double monks and the dark brown suede chukka boots with rubber sole (you have to get two to get your moneys worth on the shipping). I couldn't be happier with the quality and overall experience of ordering. The quality is above AE and is much cheaper. The calf and suede feels better than both of my AEs and the lasts are much sleeker. I was a little worried about the sizing and emailed them to get their input. I normally wear a 10E in AEs and Luisa responded and told me I should go with size 9UK in both of these shoes. The fit is right on so they definitely know their sizing and how it compares to other brands. The customer service was also great. The day after I placed the order, I received the Paypal invoice from Sandro. I submitted payment and realized I used the wrong card. I emailed Sandro back and asked him to refund it so I could use a different card. He did this right away without any issue. The shipping was surprisingly fast. I placed the order last Tuesday night and they were delivered to my place in DC yesterday (Tuesday). Also, I somehow avoided any import duties/fees from FedEx. Idk if I just got lucky or what, but I'll take it.

Definitely the first order of many to come.

Not just GY welting. Dissect your C&J and observe what's been used inside and compare to what's used inside Vass/St Crispins/bespoke shoes of various refinements. Heat formed stiffeners? Checked. Canvass lining? Checked. Thin insoles? Checked. Pick your own poison.

Owned both Meermin LM & C&J Handgrade, I like Meermin better. And they costs about the same prior to the skyrocketing price increases of C&J for the past several years.

p.s., Meermin LM insole is about 3.5-4mm thick, about 7 irons. Some bespoke makers goes as thick as 10 irons for insole...

These look great. Which lasts?

Thanks. The dub monks are Hiro and the chukkas are Rui. Both RTW from Coleccion Clasica. Rocked the monks for the first time yesterday and they were really comfortable. Doesn't seem like they'll need much breaking in.

Yea these are both 9's and they are both a pretty good fit. The monks fit very well - no slippage in the heel but not too tight. I where 10E in the AE Mcallisters which are on the 5 last and the Walden loafers which are on the 114 last. The monks fit pretty much like both my AEs, maybe slightly tighter than the Mcallisters but I think you want that with a monk since there are no laces to tighten up. I've only warn the chukkas around my apartment a little, but they feel the same as the monks, maybe a little wider in the heel and middle of foot but the toe box is the same or slightly narrower. If you check out the last chart (http://meermin.tumblr.com/image/20983395357), the Hiro juts out a little just before the toe box whereas the Rui is pretty much straight. I might take the boots for a spin at work tomorrow so I'll report back and see how they feel after a full day's wear.

I'll just note that I have several pairs of C&J, both in benchgrade and handgrade form, and all of them are leather-lined. I've never seen a pair of C&Js with fabric lining and I wouldn't buy them if they were fabric-lined.

Both benchgrade and handgrade C&J uses fabric lining between the outer leather and the inner leather lining to cost down/save from buying thicker leathers. But higher grade shoes such as EG and JL have much thicker leather lining thus no fabric interlining. Same with the old G&G, not sure about the new G&G.

Interesting. Church's has used linen canvas for years without ill effect.

I don't think there are any noticeable "ill effect" with using a canvas interlining, but it does make for a cheaper construction. Whether or not that's a deal breaker from a craftsmanship standpoint is another matter, but people on this forum snub brands for much less.
