Meermin Mallorca Shoes - Page 82

I'm having a bad case of sizing angst over my Meermins. Wise minds of SF, please aid me.

The story so far:

I ordered and received my pair of Meermin dubmonks in size UK9 based on Jose's advice. Sadly, these where clearly too big, giving major slipping at the heel. I needed to wear 4 pairs of socks to get a comfortable fit in size 9 – in my mind that´s a little more then a half size too big.

Sent the shoes back to Spain using cheapest availible postal service, which still costs me close to 60 euros. Ouch.

Went to a store and tried on some of the Loakes on the Capital last (rounded cap-toes not dissimillar from Meermin Hiro last). Size 8UK felt snugg but comfy. 8.5 was slipping at the heel. Decided that 8 UK was my size (I´ve mostly been buying shoes in EU and Japanese sizes sizes which adds to my inexperience in picking the right UK size).

Then today I recieve a pair of Chukka boots in UK8 (from another maker) that are comfortable enough when I stand or sit, but clearly pinch my toes while walking (not enough to be painfull, at least not when walking indoors, but clearly uncomfortable). Picked up a pair of suede slippers with chukkas, also size UK8, they also pinch my toes.

The chukkas in question are Herring Strathclydes (Herring ”country” last, which Herring told me was simillar in lenght and toe fit to Loake Capital).

So, the question now is, do I exchange my Meermins for size 8 and run the risk of a pinchy toebox, or 8.5 and run the risk of a slippy heel?

Which of these problems are more likely to go away with use?

From what I´ve gathered here on SF, toe boxes are the hardest part of shoes to stretch or sucsesfully break in as they are heavily reinforced to keep shape (and cap-toes are even worse due to the double layer of leather). Slippery heels will improve as the sole becomes less stiff and the cork footbed molds to your heel. That suggets that I should go for 8.5 after all. But then agan, those size 9 shoes felt a little more then half a size too big.

For now I´ve decied to wear my size 8 chukkas indoors a few days and see if the toebox will give in a little.

If not, I guess I´ll exchange my Meermins for size 8.5, as I figure toe pinching is a more major discomfort then a little heel slipping. Really want to avoid paying another 60 euros for another exchange, but getting sizing nailed down with my duck-feet  is so damn tricky.

As a Norwegian I feel your pain regarding both sizing problems and cost of returns.
I have tried on both the Loake Pimlico and the Loake Blackfriars, which are both the Capital last, and have always felt they were a bit on the big side, and the Hiro last is noticeably tighter in the same size. I'm not completely sure, but I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you.

BTW, you know there is a Meermin store in Tokyo?

I would try UK8 size, taking into account that anyway the shoes will break in few weeks of use.

Ciao

I own some Loake Strands which are on the capital last you mentioned. I'm a size 7 UK with them and a size 7 UK in Meermin's Hiro last (also the double monks). I have found that there is slightly more room through the vamp of the Loakes (which is comfortably fixed with an insert) compared to the Hiro last. I have some very slight heel slippage with my Meermin double monks but only when I wear very thin socks. Otherwise, the fit is perfect for me.

If 8 UK fits you in the capital last, I would go with 8 UK for the Hiro last also.

Keep in mind that, as others have mentioned, Meermin leather seems to be quite stiff upon the first few wears - which will obviously also contribute to the heal slippage.

hey, does anyone own a C&J 348 lasted shoe that could compare it to a new rey last with some pictures? I love the one comparing the 348 to the Hiro, anything like that would be amazing. Thanks in advance fellas, I'm looking to get me some of them suede derbys.

When I spoke to Pepe he said it was more tapered in the toe area than the 348 and advised me to go half a size up if the 348 was tight. I have wider feet so I think the New Rey would be a little too tight, but for reguler/narrower feet it should be a good match.

I generally wear a 9 or 9.5 uk and i went with the 9.5 on the meermins.

The toe box is ok, but I'm not an EE wide guy either.

I'd say go up half a size

Here are my Meermin semi brogues on the New Rey last (UK 8) next to my Lowndes on the 348 last (UK 7.5):

Even though the New Rey is a half size bigger it's still 1-2 mm shorter than the 348. You definitely need to size up half. The last is a bit lower and narrower than the 348, which suits me fine as I have slender feet (low instep, narrow heels). It fits me better than the 348. I just wish the toe box wasn't quite so narrow — I'd like just a little more wiggle room and the last might be just a little too pointy for my taste.

wow those look great. Shame the damn last is so narrow as my feet have seemingly widened lately

Excellent pic & comparisons. I hope the Meermin folk will use this in making recommendations.

+1.000

Would absolutely bought them if the last was as wide as the Hiro with toes more like the New Rey.
