The Great Carmina double monk debate!

Thread Starter
Hi everyone, in trying to decide which pair of double monks to pick up. On the one hand, the armory offers the safe choice in term of colour. The standard dark brown can be matched with most everything and is reasonably dressy. On the other hand, epaulet's offering is something fresh and something that I don't have in my wardrobe. It might be a bit more casual and not as versatile. It would save me about $100 though.

I need your help styleforum! Which one should I go for? Being that I am a very visual person, any action shots of similar shoes would be appreciated.

Here are links to the shoes:

I vote the Simpson from the Armoury. I prefer that last (and color) to the Inca last and lighter color. I find the last sleeker, and the color more versatile. Thats just me.

Based purely on looks, my preference is for the brown monk strap from The Armoury. However, Epaulet's caramel is quite eye-catching and, if it fills a gap in your wardrobe, makes for a more sensible addition.

the darker is the more versatile, as you say. DBMs are heavy looking and IMO go better with darker clothes, not the lights you'd match with the epaulets

True. However, I do think those caramel monks from Epaulet would make for a great spring look with medium blue trousers. The rich brown Armoury monks are perfect for the current season. Sadly not available in my size. :(

I have a stupid question...I just bought the Salinger Double Monk from Epaulet and in the description it indicates that the shoe has "elastic top buckle attachment (allowing you to slip into them easily)". Do you guys unbuckle the shoes each time you put the shoe on or take it off or keep them buckled?

+1. I always thought elastic bits on shoes weren't such a sign of high quality craftsmanship, however, those shoes aren't cheap!

I keep the buckles on and use a shoe horn. Unbuckling the shoes everytime is probably not good for the buckle strap.

Slip on unbuckled with a long shoe horn. But of necessity this will stretch the elastic on the buckles and at some stage they might wear out/break. But this can be easily replaced.

I find it very difficult to put the shoe on with the shoe still buckled...guess I'll have to buckle and unbuckle each time.

if you're not eyetalian skip the idea of a dm. otherwise find out which last fits you best. that's all that matters. keep in mind that leather darkens over time and you can accelerate this process. it's not rocket science. good luck

I unbuckle the top buckle to put on / take off. The elastic makes for much easier buckling and unbuckling. Buckling shoes without elastic is much more effort.
