Please Dress Me For Werk

So I work for a company with a hundo or so employees, some of which report to me. The Pres & CEO wears office pants and button-ups most of the time. The CFO wears jeans & polos/sweaters (Polo) most of the time. The Controller wears jeans & sweaters (Kohls) most of the time. These are the three dudes directly over me.

I used to go in with wool trou, button-ups, etc. Sometimes even a SC. But I always get out-the-side-of-teh-neck comments about my attire if I'm not stinking, in jeans and a wifebeater.

What should I do? Should I step it up or should I fall back?

Your opinion matterz.

Thx

Fall back. Without a jacket on, you can draw more attention to your office pants.

Further, without a tie on, you can draw more attention to your:

Think of it like an inverted contrast collar.

I vaguely remember that tape in a Spoo avatar but the history eludes me.

Awesome. I knew it had something to do with Reev.

if serious, I think the general consensus is dress on or just above their level but shine through the details like good fit, and working the textures, colors, patterns, etc.

Fall back, keep the steez. Lose the ties from your wardrobe, double up on squares.

i am inclined to say, if it doesnt negatively affect your situation at work, dress how you feel most comfortable with yourself without being OTT dressier than everyone else. you will work better if you arent thinking about the fact that you are uncomfortable.

if they are so serious about this that it will impact you negatively maybe consider scaling back a little more. but you dont have to be stinkin. shower no matter what you are wearing.

You're not wearing ties, right? Just looking sharper and adding the SC? This is basically my situation at work, although it's in academia, so there's generally more latitude given to eccentricities. However, I'd say don't make yourself miserable - you clearly feel a lot better, happier, and more comfortable dressing as you do. Just be sure to be especially friendly and courteous to everyone so it doesn't come off as elitist or vain.

Why do so many members always make excuses to dress down?

You should strive to be the best dressed man in your office, and let the chips fall where they may.

A gentleman who is dressed in classic sophisticated clothing has nothing to apologize for.

Do you deal with clients?

Of course the simple thing is to take your jacket off when you arrive at work.

If most of the dudes directly over you are mostly in jeans, then you can take a cue from them, unless of course you're meeting clients or going for a business meeting then you can get dressed a little more conservatively.

This.

I'd also suggest mixing it up sometimes, i.e., dress nice one day and like a bum the next. Just to show you're not too rigid or uptight when it comes to how you think about clothes. Some might disagree with me on this, but given your environment, seems like it might help.

Good advice, all. Actually I do try to mix it up and not wear jeans every day. The only face time I get is when I'm on a business lunch (being wooed by agencies) or when I'm interviewing for an open position. I use these to come in decked out.

I do like the advice to wear what I want and let the chips fall where they may. I've done this in the past and while I may have lost jobs over it better ones have come along.
