Suit Shoulder Pad Malfunction

Thread Starter

the very outward tips of my suit jacket's shoulder pads have a tendency to bend upwards, and i usually find myself pulling down on my sleeves to make them look right. what's going on? i dont think the suit's too wide in the shoulders for me because they fit snug--it's as if the shoulder pads got too soft and remain in the upward position when i raise my arms. what's even more frustrating is that the suits of good quality (hugo boss $1000). any help would be much appreciated! its my first suit (gift from my grandpappy) so please assume i dont know anything when you explain.

Welcome to Styleforum.
Would you be so kind as to post photos of said jacket please?

Unfortunately your problem is that you have an overpriced, poorly constructed "fashion suit".

Next time, buy a quality fully canvassed suit , and you will not have this issue. Preferably bespoke.

You get what you pay for. There are no shortcuts to quality.

What you are describing sounds like the sleeve puffs up at the tip of the shoulder. It is the method of finishing the sleeve, not the shoulder. Many recent posts talk about this. Look for threads about rope shoulders and look for some of jefferyd's pictorial explanations of what makes a roped shoulder versus a natural shoulder. These are the things you want to become aware of before you purchase a suit to get the styling details and silhouette you want and prefer.

Is it just me, or has there been a spate of these threads that seem border line trolling/spam.

No offense to you rushuson, it may just be me.

It could be a consequence of the how the suit is / was stored. See if getting the suit pressed helps.

Sometimes the pad tilting upwards is fabric bunched up around the shoulder where the sleeve connects. I dont know enough about Hugo Boss suits or the manner in which they connect the pad to the shoulder and thus sleeves. To add further commentary, I would need to see pics.

Not a particularly helpful or insightful comment given that he already has the suit and it was a gift from a person dear to him. If my grandfather bought me a suit when he was still alive, I have a strong feeling I would appreciate the gift immensely regardless of whether the garment was canvassed or not.

If the OP in future wishes to explore the sartorial delights of high end tailored suits, he will find out what he needs to know by hanging out in this forum.
