brogued boot recommendations?

Thread Starter

I'm considering buying brogued boots as yard-work/winter wear & would like some help.

1) Do leather soles really work well with a working boot? I imagine them being too slick & subject to soaking.

2) I'm a fool for shell cordovan, but I can't justify spending so much money on shoes for labor. Can anyone suggest reasonably priced goodyear welted brogued boots? I'm considering:

AE Dalton (probably on sale or as seconds),

Cheaney Cleveland,

Loake 1880 Lichfield or Burford,

??

Thanks,

Nick D.

Leather soles are terrible for a true outdoor work boot. Lug soles are a must for dealing with mud, slick grass, etc.

Personally, I would advise against getting a brogued, goodyear welted boot for actual work. "Gear" exists for a reason, and the stylish man knows when to reach for it.

A tough, waterproof boot is the appropriate footwear for trudging around the yard, shoveling snow, etc. There are a variety of excellent options available at reasonable prices from several companies. I am partial to Danner myself. This is the boot I use for hard outdoor work: http://www.danner.com/boots/workman-gtxr-400g-non-metallic-safety-toe-work-boots.html

I am partial to the RM Wiliams Kelly boot for such purposes. I can't imagine wearing a brogue boot in mud. Imagine cleaning it.
