I critiqued my boss's clothing yesterday, and still have a job

I like your humor and i totally agree with you as well. A wardrobe of grey slacks and blue blazers will make you look like a security guard.
-I reccomended that he buy a charcoal suit first. He doesn' have a charcoal suit btw. He has 2 black ones so far.
-I recommended that he buy a navy suit next. He doesn't have one of these either.
-I recommended that he add a grey, glenplaid or a blue pinstripe or a grey pinstripe suit next based on his preference.
-I recommended that he buy a blue blazer but maybe get one that is well cut with patch pockets and mother of pearl buttons instead of a boxy blazer with gold buttons.
-I recommended that he buy a couple of odd jackets in brown patterns or brown and black patterns for even more versatility.
I gave some other advice as well but I have to run to a meeting and cannot type it all out now.
I hope everybody has a good productive, lucrative Friday.

Good advice, except for the patch pockets.
I hate patch pockets.

it is actually Pirates of Silicon Valley, a made for TV movie about Bill Gates and Steve Jobbs. We work at a software company.

Are you actually in Silicon Valley?
If so, I have some recommendations.

No, not in Silicon Valley. We sell technology solutions, ERP software systems, to a pretty blue collar industry. Our clients are usually in the midwest. Our clients usually wear khakis and polo shirts. I have always dressed well, but made sure not to dress to well or get too fancy around my clients. For example: I always wear barrel cuff shirts instead of cuff links. The reason I gravitate toward dark suits, white shirts and solid or grenadine ties and such is that I don't want to stand out. I want to look sharp but wear nothing garish or flashy. I wear very high quality items, but nobody knows their cost except me.

Wow. I cannot help but feel attacked by your statement. I felt compelled to do some research and read the 29 pots of the man that I do not know that just decided to attack me.
All of your posts are about costco, jos a banks, mailorder asian tailors and such.
Do you remember this post, where you were looking for cheap suit options and I tried, in good faith, to help you:
http://www.styleforum.net/t/275074/just-how-bad-is-jos-a-bank
Anyway, I hope you are a young man that is just starting out in the business world and have great success in your future. I actually just had a moment of silence and honestly prayed that if you work hard you will have much success in life. I also just gave you the benefit of the doubt, decided that you would want to apoligize, then graciously excepted that apology. Not only did I accept it, I humbly said, "Don't worry about it. This kind of **** happens all of the time on the Internet".

Ironically, my statement was based on your bizarre attacks on others who were responding, quite reasonably, to your initial bizarre post.

First post - after a bit of lurking - and this is the thread I chose to do so on..(.can I kill more than one bird with my stone?)

I skim-read the OP's post and thought it generally a good summary of what I believe has come to be SF 'Group think'.

So I was surprised to see people turn on him.

The advice of not wearing black I thought was bang on. In general, it is not a great colour to wear for all the reasons people give. There is some method behind the madness.

Good forum this! If I may, although there is some merit in SF groupthink, ie .black I do think people take all the rules a bit seriously at times. I sometimes wonder if people tend to hide beind anonymity and that there is a bit of classic internet 'nerd'/over control syndrome going on a bit and that in real life, we can slip here and there.

I like the Australian thread - people seem very grounded. I should confess - I am an Englishman living in Melbourne. Much of what I read interests me.

Thanks guys!

I am friends with the CEO. I have worked with him over 11 years. We live in the same neighborhood. We have been on vacations together. I guess you could say that I am in the inner circle of the company. We usually pull no punches when speaking to each other.

so why are you stressing what you said????

I wasn't stressing. I just found the whole situation odd.

Many people on Styleforum post about being the only well dressed person at their company or the pressures of overdressing. I had to endure that for years at my office. So I guess this change is welcome.

I guess I just don't understand why you are asking. I am aware of some bands that he talks about and what concerts he chooses to attend. I don't really know or even care to know his top 5. I don't really get why you keep asking me these types of questions.

How about restaurant? Does he have a favorite?

What I don't understand from the OP's post (and would appreciate his enlightenment here) is that, if the CEO and OP are such good friends (and for more than a decade), why would there even the be concern, and amazement (as gleaned from the title), at not being sacked for offering the boss friend sartorial advice?
