Patch pocket jacket with straight breast pockets

I see quite a lot of patch pocket jackets with straight breast pockets - example below:

Am I alone in thinking that this is slightly jarring? What thought process is behind this?

Surely a patch pocket jacket is considered casual rather than formal - so why not go the whole hog?

Thoughts?

Some times you dont want to go the whole hog ...

Also, breast patch looks crap if the shape is not close to perfect ... IMO

Yup - breast pocket shape is very important for sure.

I just find the use of both to be a little odd.

I'm not an avid follower of either but always get a little disappointed when I see a jacket which doesn't use patches throughout.

I dont like the use of any patch pockets on pinstriped suit in the OP pic. Isnt pinstriped supposed to be a city design while patch pockets are casual ? IMO, this is not a combo in which city and country gel very well

I just used an example I had to hand. This is actually a jacket - not a suit. But that's a whole different thread / can of worms.

Hackett. They're a real hit and miss crowd.

They also made this:

Same kind of thing (patch / straight)

+1

A jacket I just received recently has 3 patch pockets and it just looks odd out of the gate with this fabric. It may grow on me, but if not I can always have him remove the breast patch cut a regular welt breast pocket. Personally, I'm a big fan of the two patch pockets below and welt breast pocket up top. My work environment is primarily business casual and sometimes 3 patch can seem too casual, but the 2 just right.

Couldn't agree more. This is strictly personal preference territory, but to my eye it just looks odd to see patch pockets on hips but not on the breast.
I think patch pockets are gaining in popularity, but aj makes a good point with the breast pocket. In RTW it's a safer bet to cut a straight breast pocket, rather than risk an oddly cut patch.

I have only ever owned one patch pocket jacket with a straight breast pocket. It was a crested blazer that featured my fraternity's coat of arms. I used to wear it to socials and mixers. I bought the jacket quite intentionally because I liked the casualness of the patch pockets (I mean it was a college party jacket after all). However, I feel it is overkill when one adds a crest to a blazer with a patch breast pocket. The crest obviously calls attention to the breast, having a patch pocket just makes things too busy IMO.

Now obviously the jackets pictured above don't have crests, but I do understand the logic of the straight pocket if one is planning on wearing a crest.

That detailing is fine. The shape of a patch breast pocket needs to be perfect if it is to work but this is perfectly accessible.

I don't think that the cloth in your example is suitable for that look though.
