Could a 48L Zegna suit be tailored down to a 44L

Thread Starter

My local bankrupted Filene's has a pretty nice-looking gray Zegna suit marked down to about $700. It's a 48L and I'm a 44L (actually an XL, but this one works on the sleeves for me). If I took it to a tailor, would he be able to fit it to me, or is there just too much to work with?

I don't think I would grab it at $700. But if it keeps dropping in price and nobody grabs it, I might consider it.

don't do it.

I would be ok with tailoring down one full size if the tailor was really competent. More than that - no way.

Technically speaking I believe it could be done, but that means completely recutting and redoing the jacket, so why not go bespoke instead... if you get that suit, you're basically getting Zegna cloth, not a suit... not worth it.

Do it, but beware of the total costs.  Most larger sized suits are enlarged proportionally from the size 38/40 samples.  Even at size 44+ they will still have the same shape and waist suppression thus will never fit quite right.

I have had the experience of altering el cheapo used ebay suits in size 46 into size 42 and they fit great.  Not bespoke quality fit, but better than Mens Warehouse or most things off the rack.

BTW I have a used, 44R RLPL DB Glen Plaid suit for sale, pst if interested.  :p

Don't do it. Put that money towards something that fits. You'll be spending a lot of money at the tailor and it will never look as good as one that was cut the right size to begin with.

You'll just be throwing good money after bad on that investment.
