Advice required on SAB Westminister 2 purchased from Mr. Porter

Thread Starter
I've just received delivery of a SAB Westminister 2 I purchased from Mr.Porter the other day and am currently wondering if the bag should be returned as there seems to be some white spots on the bag. Is this cleanable with a leather cleaner?

Here's a few pictures (please excuse the hastily taken pictures from my ancient webcam):

1. Under the flap
263

2. front area near the lock

It's my first Bridled leather bag, so I'm not sure if this is a natural occuring thing or if age will cover it up.... would really appreciate some feedback on this.

Thanks everyone.

Return it - the white marks are a fault IMO.

This is somewhere else on the forum I can't remember where. It's just something that happens to the leather when it has been stored a long time I thought.

Hi,

Bridle leathers do develop white powdery thing on the surface which IIRC is wax and oil used to treat the leather. This should be normal for bridle leather, although I've only had experience with a wallet. As you use the bag, you should start seeing less and less of the white powdery stuff.
I was told that if you want to clean it, brushing and wiping with a dry cloth would work but not to use a leather cleaner.

I hope this helps.

I'd send off an email to SAB, maybe even a phone call if your searching for a quick answer.

Does the powder come off with a dry or damp cloth?

Email them for care tips, but I think this is pretty normal.

For my experience with bridle belts, this is normal after storage, it's wax

Buff the leather with a soft cloth before contact the shop.

The rich white bloom is normal on quality bridle leather. Wipe off with a soft cloth and treat with leather feed. Do not use any leather cleaner.

Buff the leather with a soft cloth (or a brush).............then there is no need to contact the shop.

I have seen a white bloom or deposit on the leather, what is that?

Bridle leather is impregnated with oils, fats and waxes to make it strong, and keep it supple. The white deposit you sometimes see on bridle leather is tallow, migrating to the surface of the leather. The bridle we use is of the highest grade, and the oils, waxes and tallow are hand worked into the leather, to achieve a high degree of penetration.

Although we polish all SageBrown bridle items at the final finishing and inspection stage, the whiteness will migrate back to the surface after a period of time. This is quite normal, and is a sign of the high quality of bridle we use demonstrating the degree to which the waxes fats and oils have penetrated into the leather (lesser 'bridle' leathers can have a finish sprayed on at the end of it's process).

The leather, if brushed with a soft cloth or a clean brush, will buff back to a beautiful shine. The whiteness is a sign much appreciated by connoisseurs of leather.
