looking for a new overcoat

Thread Starter

I'm looking to get a new overcoat and I'm having a b*tch of a time deciding, partly because I really do not know what brands make what is considered good quality coats and I'm not sure if I should be buying something from a store/retail or taking the risk on ebay.

I'm looking for single breasted, black, dark grey or dark navy and preferably full length. My budget is ~$600 or less thought I'd possibly be willing to go a little over if it's worth it. In general I prefer to pay for higher quality rather than higher fasion.  Along this same line I prefer it not be too trendy, I plan on wearing it for years.

Here's one from Barneys of NY co-op which looks nice, but again, I have no idea about quality.

I had looked on Hugo Boss website but tbh the stratus didn't quite do it for me.  Here's a Hugo Boss Colombo in grey, "new" on eBay (it ended today w/o sale, pretty sure he will just relist).

Canali for Bloomingdales Proposta 4 button in black, "new" on ebay:

I also have looked at this much cheaper coat from Lauren by Ralph Lauren

any thoughts on these or possible alternatives would be great.

Thanks,

Chris

Is Navy okay? It tends to be more versatile. If so, this coat

http://www.ralphlauren.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4367978&cp=1760781.3351645&view=99&parentPage=family

often can be had for under $550 on sale....

that is a beautiful coat.  Where would it go on sale for such a low price, through the ralph lauren website?

The website often sells out of the more desirable sizes by the time the prices get that low. The stores are your best bet. I've gotten my size (a very common size 40) in two different colors each of the last 2 years for that price. They are always willing to do a locate and do a charge-send from other stores if they don't have your size.

Are there particular times of year to be looking for it on sale?

Here's an awesome Caruso that's better than anything you posted. Not sure about the size since you didn't post your size.

Stay away from Lauren by RL and Hugo Boss.

That coat looks real nice but sadly I am a 42 (us) =/

I've also had a Luigi Bianchi Mantova in dark navy cashmere (100%) added to the list and is what I'm currently leaning towards.

+1; needless to say, Lauren is not RL (anymore).

We have these at eHABERDASHER: Saks Fifth Ave pure cashmere coats made in Italy for $295 on sale. They're a more traditional American fit (fuller) but since you mentioned classic we thought you might be interested - had black and navy but sold out of those - only charcoal in your size left:

Alright, because I'm feeling silly (its twice my stated max $) and I like the way it looks...Thoughts on this Cesare Attolini in charcoal gray?

edit: nm, they just changed the price by ~$700, lol

When you can afford it, check out O'Connells Clothing.
A huge selection of outerwear. Definitely an "Ivy" vibe.
