Question about jacket proportions and tailoring

Hello  everyone,

I'm a hard to fit guy, with a 42 inch chest and a 42 inch waist. Zero drop, yeah. I'm working on fixing that, but I am required to wear suits to work, and all I can afford is OTR. I've found suit separates, which solves the drop problem between jacket/pants, but the jacket itself is a problem.  A size 42 fits quite well in the shoulders, but then I can't close the jacket without it being too tight, and it will be small on the butt as well. What would be best in this case?

- Get a 44 (which fits my belly) then leave it as is. Since I have narrow shoulders, this would make them appear wider; and even though the fit wouldn't be technically correct, it would at least give the illusion of some waist.

- Get a 42 and have the waist let out. This would technically fit better, but might be unflattering as there wouldn't be any waist shape.

I'd like to spend as few $$$ as possible as these suits will be trashed as I lose weight. That means no excessive tailoring, no MTM...

Thank you.

Try separates from a place like Jos. A. Bank that's known for having a rather generously sized waist in the jacket. But really, I would say there's no good answer. I would buy the 42 if it's actual possible to let the waist out more, something that fits is going to look better than something that doesn't.

Hmmm... I prefer trying it on before buying, can't do that with Jos. A. Bank, but yeah they do have portly cut separates. I can't find that cut around here though. Will see if the jackets I was looking at can have their waist let out... as long as it's a decent fit it's ok, as I plan on losing another 40 pounds anyways...

Thanks!

Yes I have a similar challenge, a 48L fits me comfortably, but the shoulders are just a smidge too wide, barely noticeable, but the shoulders on a 46 fit me about right.

Maybe losing weight will help.  Meanwhile I have been thinking about MTM shirts, etc.

Yeah that's pretty much it... the question is, would you rather have shoulders / chest that are a little wider than they should, but give the illusion of some waist, or would you go for a perfect fit in the shoulders and a waistless jacket? Wouldn't that be unflattering?

Get the suit that fits the shoulders and have the waist let out. Lose a little weight and have the waist taken in to where it was originally. Lose a little more and have the waist taken in again. You won't change that much in the chest or shoulder with weight loss until you maybe do lose 40 pounds. You will get the longest amount of wear from buying a jacket to fit your chest/shoulders and not the waist.

That makes sense. In fact I've already lost over 100 pounds and now that I realize, my shoulders haven't changed that much.. Thank you very much for your advice Despos!

In my case I have always been big through the chest, the waist not so much a problem.  How much can be let out of a 46L around the chest, generally speaking?

Thanks for the advice!
