What to do about being size 39R?

I stumbled upon this site today and look forward to lots of reading and learning.  What great contributions I've read only this morning.  I'm in awe of the meticulousness and details discussed.  Really, really edifying and you've definitely made me realize my secret shame!

I lost about 25 lbs this year and haven't been able to wear any of my size 42R suits for months (which fit like crap anyway).  I thought I was now a 40R, but have realized I'm actually 39R (Jos A. Bank suit fit great..quality was <meh>), and unfortunately the odd sizes aren't common.  I guess I'll likely find a brand where the 40R fits OK and have it tailored from there.

What do you other odd-sized fellows do?

39R is not an odd size. Lots of size 38 range from size 36-40, and lots of 40 range from 38-42 so they both can cover your size. You just need to find slightly slimmer 40's or slightly large 38. The difference isn't very large. Which shoulders fit better? 38 or 40?

Brooks Brothers carries size 39. But as stated above, sizes 38 and 40 could fit too, depending on the cut.

This! Which actually makes being a 39R better because you have more choices. It all depends on the cut of the suit.

I'm a true 37S and I can wear anything from boxy 36s to slim 38s.

Dior Homme, Kris Van Assche, Costume National, and some others run slim almost universally. (I'm a 40 in most suits and I have a KVA that's a 44 and doesn't fit me large.)

A 40 suit in any of those would definitely not be too big on a 39 (though knowing some of DH's cuts it might even be too small).

40 fits me better, though as advised I haven't really tried on a 38 in too many different makers.  I just assumed that after trying on one that 38 was too small, and so I left it at that and have looked to size 40.  The 39 at Jos A. Bank I tried recently looked and felt perfect (and I'm kind of regretting not buying it when the salesperson offered it to me on sale for $225).  I'll just soldier on and see how different brands fit.  It's kind of more fun that way...I guess we all really do have more options than the size tag indicates.

Thanks to all!  You are all the big brothers that I wish I was!

Be glad you're not a 39S. There's nothing available in that size.

I'm in the same boat as you.

My best fitting OTR suit is Zegna Milano in a 40. Check it out.

For a super cheap fit, Uniqlo medium works really quite well also.

Know what's worse? 39L. Welcome to my world. Doesn't matter too much anymore though since I'm venturing into bespoke.

Here's a list of some other options:
Paul Stuart, Southwick, Ben Silver, Hart Schaffner & Marx, and Hickey Freeman

Although a 39R in one brand might be a different size in another.

What TonyRomo is telling you is sound advice - in your case, just because it isn't on the tag doesn't mean it can't/ won't fit you.

If you are determined to find a tagged garment in your size, of the very highest quality, try Oxxford.

You may also want to be especially on the lookout for suits in European 50R. While its true what others have said (a US 40R can fit slim or a 38R can be full), in general a European 50R will fit closer to a 39R. Good luck!

I'm in the same boat. 40's feel too big, a 38 too small. The BB 39 fits just right.
