Newb question: Tailoring vs MTM / Bespoke

Thread Starter
I'm an unfortunately slim male, in need of a good dress wardrobe (pants, suit, shirts). While I don't want to spend a fortune, I don't mine paying for quality items that'll fit well and last (<$200 per shirt, <$1000 suit). I've managed to collect a few nicely fitting pieces here and there (Gucci blazer, Brioni shirts, etc) but for the most part, standard off the shelf doesn't fit very well.

I'm left deciding which route to take; tailoring something off the rack, or going the MTM / bespoke route. As I said, I don't want to bankrupt myself on clothes (which I have a feeling custom made will do), but at the same time, I don't want a suit that looks like it came from a jigsaw factory. I know it's a topic that's probably been hashed to death before, but with the amount of information here, it's hard to sift through everything to find what I need. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

This entirely depends on how well tailored OTR fits you. If 'unfortunately slim' means too slim for OTR to ever fit properly then MTM or bespoke is your only option, otherwise it's just a question of whether the better fit is worth the extra cost to you.

buying off the rack, in my opinion, is far simpler, easier, and cheaper than taking a mtm or bespoke route. can't tell you how many stories i've read of people who have been disappointed with their very pricey purchases. that said, if you are too slim to buy something OTR, then bespoke or mtm could be a potential option.

that said, if you can, see if you can find some slim suits... jcrew, zegna, boss, armani, rlbl all have slimmer cuts that you could probably purchase for under 1000. aside from that, if you want to try online mtm, there's always indochino, propersuit, mytailor, and a ton of other guys who have some positive reviews on this forum.

good luck!

So I'm basically a 38L, which doesn't really exist in America and I haven't had to do custom yet. I either find longer size 38, or slimmer/longer size 40. So unless you're a very hard to find size, then you don't need to do custom. However, I do mtm for shirts because those are hard to find but are cheap enough going mtm.

I think those are stock photos for people who don't have icons, haha.

hhmmm, tough call. IMO, hunt around and try to find something off the peg that's very good and add in a bit of tailoring. Once you've worn it a while and have a good sense of what you don't like or not, then start looking into MTM. I'm also hard to fit but have hunted around and found a few OTR makes/models that work. Once you have a good idea of specific pieces (fabrics, features, etc) then it's time for the MTM becuase while you get most of the styling done for you with the designer of OTR (something people who do a lot of MtM understimate the value of), you're stuck with whatever fabrics and styles they choose... so when you go to MTM you really have to give a lot more direction for what you want but if you know what you want then there's a blue sky out there for you.
