Winter care for a leather chukka boot

I'm considering picking up the AE Malvern in brown burnished leather as my casual shoe for this Fall and Winter.  Living in Chicago, there is always snow, salt or puddles on the sidewalks.  Is there something that can be done to protect the leather from the salt and elements?  I assume mink oil would be bad for such a high quality boot.  What do others do to protect leather boots in the winter?

I bought that exact shoe a year ago for the same purposes. As long as you take care of the shoe with basic maintenance, it will be unaffected by the Chicago conditions. They look better (and healthier) today than they did the day I received them. They were perfect for me yesterday in the rain we had here. I really like the shoe as my main bad weather workhorse.

What is your basic maintenance?  AE leather cleaner/conditioner and creme polish?  Did you use the AE spray waterproofer?

I wipe them off when they are dirty and have used the AE leather cleaner/conditioner and polish twice. I could probably condition and polish them more often, but they show no signs of ill effects and I don't baby them, at all.

If you're going to use them for winter wear consider the pebble grain version. It will hide blemishes and scuffs better than the regular calf.

Here's a quick shot of them today:

They haven't been cleaned or polished in a while and they got pretty wet yesterday. This is after a year of heavy use. Like I said, I don't baby them.

I have a pair of cheaper Ralph Lauren Chukkas that has been through several bad winters since 2003. I used to treat them with mink oil. The last two seasons I have used Saphir cream and moderate amounts of C&J wax polish.

They have great patina now IMHO. Too bad I can´t give them new soles... They are well made but not that well unfortunately.

You're welcome. I had to throw my two cents in on this topic and I would definitely recommend these shoes.

I'd like to add that sno-seal works very well for weather-proofing your shoes.

If they do dry out, rub them down with neatsfoot oil, it'll restore suppleness.
