If you lost your entire wardrobe in a fire, then what would you buy?

If this happened right now with the cold weather?
A nice winter parka, touque, scarf, sweats and some gorilla slippers.

Not much! I have a storage unit full of goodies, including about 40 plastic tubs bursting with clothes.

Did you check to see if their fire or theft insurance covers your property? Read the contract.

Alas, the unit didn't come with insurance; I had to buy my own.

Of course. I'd just replace everything. My homeowners insurance covers replacement cost. A standard homeowners policy covers contents for 50% the value of the property and that's without any riders for very expensive items like jewellery of paintings. So if my $6m house burnt to the ground for example, I'd collect $6m for the property and $3m for the contents.
If any of yu live in apts. then you should get a tenant's policy which covers mostly cntents and is cheap. The building is the owner's problem and no he will not cover your property if the building burns down.
This. In my area, $35k of personal property coverage would only be around $150 per year, this includes a $300k liability limit (for damage to other property)

a new... wait for it... wardrobe. I would assume that every SF gents would have insurance for their wardrobe.

You'd assume so, but I bet some people here have items that cross the single-item value limit on some cheaper policies without them realising. I don't know the US insurance market, but most UK policies place such limits, unless you specifically add the items (you have to provide proof of purchase cost to them e.g. a receipt).

It's worth checking the small print of your policies, especially if you have high-end RTW, bespoke or exotic items that might cross that threshold. Also check what the detail of the policy is in terms of new-for-old replacement or whether they reimburse a percentage of the value when new only, to reflect wear/depreciation.

I would go to a carpenter to have a bespoke wardrobe.

I would go back to the roots: uncured animal skins and fig leaves.

That's what I said. People who live in rented property are only getting insurance for the contents against fire, theft etc Homeowners (and tenants) are package policies. And btw, the liability is actually to cover injuries to people while they're on your property eg. like they have an accident in your apt or fall down the stairs etc
The theft part of the policy also covers off premises theft eg. like from your car since auto policies don't (it's usually limited to 10% of the policy amount which in your case would be $3500)

Holdfast-you're not reading correctly. I said that you should specify when you take a policy that you want replacement cost not actual cash value. And yes, there are limitations on certain items (you could cover the excess with a cheap rider eg diamond ring) but some of these limitations only apply to theft and not fire so read the policy.
And btw, you do not need a receipt to make a claim either in the UK or US, that's a misconception most people have.

I'd order my butler to give me his morning coat and then go to see my tailor about new clothes.

Seriously though, the basics first. Khaki's, a couple of shirts and SC's (socks and undergarments is a given). I do have an extra storage space with clothes though.
