Getting the four-in-hand knot right

Whenever I try to knot a four-in-hand tie knot, it ends up looking the one mr. Erdogan is wearing on this Time Magazine (europe edition) cover — flat against the body, and too wide at the bottom. Is there some trick to get it more triangular? A half windsor gets a nicer shape, but tends to get a bit bulky with a thick tie.

Pull it tighter when you loop it around the front, then when you're pulling through, hold the knot and cinch it tighter than normal. Then finally adjust it to your neck. Just mess around with how tight you like it. (giggity)

I have been practicing this stuff for the last couple years, and the secret to any tie knot is how you dress it at the end. When you throw that last wrap around the front, then up and over and through the wrap (which you are holding open with your fingers of the off hand), then tighten up;

Shape the knot top and bottom. The cool web vids show the guy spreading the knot at the top, and pinching a little at the bottom, to make that nice triangular shape.. Form the dimple at the top as you feed the blade through the wrap. Hold it at the bottom (pinch in the middle) as you tighten up. Adjust. Adjust again.

If it ain't right, take that baby off and do it again. For me, this happened a lot in the beginning, but less and less now. Practice. Practice is everything. I think that a lot of guys feel, ah, sort of feminine if they dress up in front of the mirror in the house. I do this sh!t whenever I have time to do it. Practice it all; getting the jacket on and off, tieing the tie, all of it.

The mirror is your vanity critic. Your best style friend. Use it.
