Double Breasted Overcoat with Double Breasted Suit or Jacket

Esquire or GQ recently said that you don't wear a DB overcoat with a DB suit or jacket as it is overkill and should not be done (implying that doing so is a faux pas). Is this true? Or, are Esquire and GQ full of it?

Most people don't own both to begin with that it's probably seen so infrequently. In fact, each one by itself is probably seen so infrequently that it really doesn't matter. Regardless, you shouldn't be able to see the suit under the overcoat, right?

I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I had a feeling that Esquire and GQ are full of it regarding that DB rule. It looks like I was right. smile.gif

I have both, but have never worn them together.

This is bollocks. Have a look at the POW. Those hypocrites just voted him the best dressed man but then say he's been doing a faux pas all his life? Balls!

My vote for full of it. The overcoat should be worn closed at any rate, so why a DB jacket would be visible underneath is beyond me.

As ever these magazines are 'speaking' nonsense. They need to fill their pages, they have no credible writers, so nonsense is the result.

Just ignore them.

Wouldn't this imply that a single-breasted coat with a single-breasted jacket are verboten as well? Silly magazines.

That could be too much visual weight (top-heavy) and too much warmth.

^^ Not in the Arctic.

Who in their right mind pays any attention to what GQ says here anyway?
