Molloy & Sons Donegal Tweed (in Donegal)

I was in Donegal a week or so ago, and Sean & Kieran Molloy of Molloy & Sons invited me to tour their tweed-making facilities. Outside of a couple of folks who hand-weave blankets and stuff for tourists and Magee, they're the last actual Donegal tweed being made in Donegal. They're fifth or sixth generation weavers, and Sean's dad John founded John Molloy mill in the 60s. The mill went from tweed to knits in the 80s and 90s, so Sean and Kieran (his son) took the old equipment and set up a new company to make tweed.

Really wonderful guys, really beautiful fabrics. I saw some overcoating they were making on special order for a company that rhymes with Pay Shrew, they've made stuff for Michael Alden, all kinds of stuff. The wool and finished fabrics are processed in Donegal, as well. They're a genuine father-son outfit - it's just the two of them, though they're working towards a bit of expansion.

Your voice was a clear and distinct one and a great video. Funnily enough my maternal grandmother's family are Molloys who came to Australia in the 1860s. My aunt Lilly Molloy was a famous comedienne and silent screen actress in the early 20th century.

The Molloy factory shop is pretty big though.

Certainly compared to the small shops like Kennedy's and Campbell's in Ardara selling tweed.

Well worth a visit.

John Molloy is a different company from Molloy & Sons. Shaun is John's son (I don't think John is around anymore), and they're separate enterprises now.

John Molloy does sell a lot of tweed though. It is not just knitwear.

Well, I finally got my $(*&^ computer to run that video.  Nice one!  Do they have distributers, say in the U.S. or is must all orders go to them directly?

They mostly sell to the industry, but they're putting together a small range of direct-to-consumer stuff. Email them for more info.
