What exactly is a "monkey suit"?

I work at an international company, and my English isn't the greatest in the world.

When talking to a friend about dressing up, he said, "I don't want to wear a monkey suit."

I know he wasn't talking about wearing a costume to resemble the animal for some dress-up party, so what was he talking about?

Monkey Suit is an old slang term for a tuxedo. Guess your friend does not like formal wear...

Back when I worked for a fairly big law firm, it was common to hear attorneys talk about "putting on the monkey suit" to describe dressing to the nines when meeting with a client. That's probably not the original meaning, but it seemed to be a pretty common thing to say, so perhaps it has taken on that meaning over time (or at least around here).
