Help and ideas - business attire

Thread Starter

I just joined this forum, so bear with my everyone :)

I'm a big Model U.N. fan, and the dress code requires western business attire.  So far, I haven't really worried about how I looked, and I've just been going with my one black suit, white shirts, and a red tie for everything.

However, this seems like a very boring look, and I feel like something more interesting and unique would make me feel better about myself and help me to stand out in the ivy league assemblies of three or four hundred people.

The thing is, I really know nothing about style.  My friend has been standing out by wearing basically the exact same thing I wear but with a black waistcoat, and I didn't even know what a waistcoat was.  I also once tried to wear a red crew-neck sweater.  Clearly I have no idea what I'm doing.

So help and ideas would be appreciated :)

Thanks!

Okay, here's how to achieve exactly what you want, with one simple change in what you're wearing, at little expense, and without having to know all about style -

Replace your current necktie, with a bow tie. A nice, conservative bow tie. You will absolutely stand out from the crowd, but a bow tie stays within the boundaries of western business attire. It's interesting. It's unique. You'll feel great about yourself. I'm not telling you to wear a bow tie to a job interview necessarily, but you're a student and this is a Model UN we're talking about; you're not interviewing for an Associate's position at Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Wear the bow tie.

Go to . Something like their Honor Stripe, in red and black, would be perfect. $15. And if you have a choice, get self-tied, not pre-tied. Self-tied really is better. Go to youtube and learn how to tie a bow tie. It'll take you a few minutes to learn. It's a skill worth having. Someday you may be in a wedding, and your ability to tie the groom's bow tie could make you the hero of the day. Cute bridesmaids will hear about how you came through in a pinch, and you'll get lucky. Hey, it could happen.

Oh, and bow tie beats waistcoat, like rock beats scissors.

I'm not "That Bow Tie Guy," who wears bow ties everyday. But I do wear them once in a while. Not so much to work, but on social occasions, especially (but not exclusively) in summer. They rule. Only thing is, you need the self-confidence to wear one. Most guys won't do it. Set yourself apart from the crowd and wear one.

And I'll refrain from expressing my general dislike for black suits.

I think you can always vary the color of suit to dark navy or gray, that way black wouldn't be too boring.
