I guess I'm doing something right. The meteorologist at the local TV station is going to use my photo of the barn above at noon and 5 today during her weather forecast segment. Not sure how they're going to fit in but I'll take the exposure.

Oh no!!! How did you diagnose? It hasn't happened to mine (yet...i think).

I don't have any pics to show just yet, but wanted to get an opinion from you guys. I have the opportunity to pick up a 1962 Leica M3 body (in excellent visible condition) for under $500. I will of course still need to find a lens or two for it. I don't know the last time it was CLAd, but would probably have it done anyway. Do you think $500 is worth it, considering I don't know what shape the inner workings are in?

Pretty easy: In aperture priority mode take a shot at F2, it should be exposed propably. Take another at F16, if it's heavily over-exposed you've got SAB (over-exposure due to the camera thinking it's stopped down to F16, increasing ISO and exposure time, when the blades are actually stuck at F2).

I knew the risk going in, but it's obviously still annoying. Happened within the one year warranty period, but even if it hadn't Fuji will still change the lens assembly for free as it's a 'known error'.

I think if it does work 500 is a good deal. Can't you rent a lens or something to try it out?

cody, I like the desert in iceland picture. The car photo isn't bad..not very dynamic but the slight angle shift helps it. I'd love to see that in person though!

Iceland as a whole is worth seeing, I road tripped all of Iceland with a friend and it was like visiting another planet.

I broke down and got it. Talked him down a bit on the price too.

Well you should be able to advance the film lever and fire the shutter on that M3 without a lens attached. At least you can go through the different shutter speed settings and get an idea if it's working properly. Look at the interior and see if there's any crud or mold growing inside. If possible see if the person who's selling it will let you take it to a camera store and have it inspected by a tech.

If nothing else, barring any major damage to the internals, it'll cost you between 2 and 300 bucks to have an M3 CLAed. You should do this regardless of condition. When it's all said and done you'll have 7 or 800 bucks in the body which is a very good deal. M3 bodies in nice shape go for a lot more than that and if they've been recently CLAed you're looking at a body that would run between 1200 and 1700 bucks.

Well ignore the first part of my post since you got it....

I already bought it. Everything seems to be in order, no mold, crud, rust, etc. The shutter is clean and works well, and the shutter speeds seem about right...no dragging. The L seal is still intact too. I figured it would need servicing anyway...there's no telling how long it has been since it was serviced....if ever.  I am a pretty happy guy right about now...especially after looking for one of these for so many years.

I know how waiting can go. After I get myself setup with a Pentax 67 an M3 is next on my list. I figure it's about time to get my hands on one with a couple of lenses while the getting is still good. A lot of the old glass is starting to be converted to digital use and prices are going through the roof.
