I so agree with you on that (although taking the L from 8th avenue to 1st avenue was cited as "just fucking walk" and is no further than the upper east to the upper west). My gf lives in Park Slope and her sister in Astoria. Getting from one to the other is a royal pain. I'd quite like to be able to get the subway from Park Slope to Williamsburg, but she's nowhere near the G and apparently that's a total shitstorm anyway. The subway is pretty good if you live in Manhattan or are going to Manhattan, but going from outer borough to outer borough really sucks.
What are your thoughts on the time to next train stuff? I think they're great, because I know if I'm better off taking the local that's coming in or waiting for the express. What really bugs me is when there are two lines on the sign (they do this on the 1,2,3 at Times Square all the time) and they use the top line to inform you that the 1 train is now arriving (no shit sherlock, I can see it) and the bottom line to tell me to tell a police officer or an MTA employee if I see something suspicious. Then the 1 train pulls out and the next express is 10 minutes away. Aaaaaarrrrrrrggggghhhhhhh!!!
