Shoe suggestions to wear with jeans

Thread Starter

Hi everyone, new to the forum, and "fashion" in general. Trying to upgrade my wardrobe some and dress a little better. I don't have a ton of money, but would like to start purchasing a few pieces.

What I am after is a pair of 'dressy' shoes that I can wear with jeans in a effort to dress them up some. All I normally wear are sneakers, and it is time I upgraded from that look. Like I said I don't have tons of money, but don't mind spending ~$200 on a decent pair of shoes that will last me a while.

Any recommendations are welcome, even some pictures of styles that I should look for or what I should stay away from. I don't want to be on the bleeding edge of style, or buy something that will be out of style in a few months, just something that will look good with jeans or a little more casual dress pant. I'm above average height (6'4") and slim (185lbs) if that makes any difference at all in what I should be looking at.

$200 is a very low budget for a pair of quality shoes, assuming you want new.

From reading your description, it seems like Aldens would fit your needs quite well. However, a first quality pair starts at no less than $400 and can get into almost $700 for cordovans. You can wait around and settle for Alden seconds at about $300-400 from Shoemart if you want.

Alternatively, you can settle for Allen Edmonds, which are a bit cheaper, but still more than $200. You may be able to get a pair for that price at Nordstrom Rack if you scour the inventory on a regular basis.

Truthfully, I think you should spend $200 on 2 pairs of Clarks Desert Boots. One in dark brown and one in beeswax. These are what I wore the majority of the times before I landed a job that allowed me to buy more expensive shoes. While they are casual shoes, I've worn the dark brown color to several job interviews in my field and no one even cared. They look great with jeans or chinos.

Brown suede chukka boots... Or in your case, the Desert Boots sound like a good idea.

I agree--you can't go wrong with Clarks Original Desert Boots.  They're classic and go really nicely with jeans.  I'm been hunting for a pair of boots for a while and I think I might just go with another pair of Clarks.

And like someone mentioned up thread, brown brogues are also a great go-to option.
