Agreed. I don't get the jegging leg fashion alot here are into . I don't even really like any kind of taper to my pants and I wear 11-12 shoe sizes.

What kind of shoes do you normally wear?

Something like a pair of Dunks or Vans go great with tapered jeans... but loafers and a lot of boots will make you look like you are wearing clown shoes (depending on the shoe size of course)

IMO that has more affect on the perceived shoe size than the amount of taper...

7.5 opening for my size 6.5 feet.

no way, you mean 13? my current jeans have a 15" leg opening and i wear a size 11 vans classic which looks ok but anything bigger my feet start to look floppy (i think)

I wear size 10 shoes and like anywhere from 7.5 to 8.5, depending on the cut of the pants. I've got some EG pants that are 8.5, nice comfy loose fit but they look better with boots that have a little longer, sleeker profile. Jeans I prefer 8" and under, though I draw the line at a Levis 511 cut. I like a little stack and skinny jeans stack oddly IMO.

Somewhere I read a good rule of thump for dress shoes is to aim for about 5" of shoe exposed when you extend the crease -- sounds about right to me.

Edit: Sounds weird but I always peep the shoe/pant interface. Can make or break an outfit and can be really hard to get right...

Personally it will depend a lot on the taper and cut of the jeans as well as the shoes/boots being worn with them. My 17cm leg opening Diors work with my Margiela boots, but with ann Demeulemeesters give the clown appearance.

its more then the leg opening how slim you are in general will give you clown shoes effect a lot of these guys with the bigger size shoe and small hem openings could be bulky enough to make it a non clown looking effect meaning their legs might look like ready to blow out of the pants.
