Mobile Hot Spot Devices

Does anyone use ?
I am looking at the Samsung through Verizon - only for use on trains, airports etc (and of course when we lose power at home).
I do not plan on exceeding the 5GB monthly.
A quick search provides some pretty shitty reviews.

I have one, it's not the best thing ever, but I got it to run my Macbook and iPad on so that I can work at coffeeshops, in taxis, and stuff. It's kind of finicky, but it works, and it's really hard to tell the difference in speeds unless you measure them on the site - it doesn't seem any slower than trying to tether a 3G cellphone to your computer. I use a fuckload of data every month (might have to do with this site...) so I just get unlimited data on both my 3g dongle and my iPhone.

I've got the Clear iSpot for use with my iPad and it's worked fine - much faster than the 3G in the iPad and it's unlimited. The only gripe I have is it doesn't work well at home, but since I've got DSL there it's a non-issue. It is a puzzle, as it works everywhere else in Chicago and Clear's web site says there is a tower one block over...

It is "one more thing to carry" but mine sits in a pocket of my briefcase most of the time, so I don't notice it. Of course, that means I often forget to turn it off so it's dead when I get home. smile.gif

Thanks - I have unlimited on my IPhone. I will only use this for my IPad.

Things like MiFis? I've heard of them, but never seen one. For 3G wireless internet with my laptop, I use a Huawei EVDO USB modem, prepaid, no contract. Probably use 3GB-5GB a month.

How did you decide if this was better than tethering via the iphone?

I didn't. I just went ahead and picked up the Verizon MiFi. Haven't they canned the 'tethering' and you require a second contract?
I am with ATT on my IPhone and I do not particularly like them. i travel a lot Internationally and usually get shafted by them on my Bills, for Data, Calls and Texts.
It's $50 a month & I'm not paying for it, so figured it's worth a shot. I gave it a test run today with my Laptop and it was reasonably quick.
