First Time MTM Suit

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum, but I have learned a lot by purusing others' posts. I've never been stylish, but I'm trying to rectify that (to the utter enjoyment of my wife).

I'm really difficult to fit suit-wise. I'm tall with a short torso (or so says Brooks Brothers) and I could never quite get a suit to fit right. I'm a 44XL, which is a difficult to find size, so I started looking into MTM suits. Based on some positive feedback on StyleForum and some local recommendations, I looked into Hong Kong Tailors here in Atlanta, GA. I talked to them and their MTM suits start at about $850 for a fully-canvassed, 100% wool suit. Well, after Googling them a bit, I actually found a soon-to-expire Groupon ($600 for a $1300 MTM suit at Hong Kong Tailors) and pulled the trigger. I'm getting fitted Saturday afternoon.

This is my first MTM suit, so my questions are:

-Are there any special considerations that I should keep in mind or anything I should be sure to communicate to the tailor?

-Besides color/pattern, how should I choose the material for the suit (which is presented as books of swatches)?

Note that I did make a trip to Needless Markup and spent some time looking at some of their OTR Zegna's, Isaiah's, Bionis, Oxxford's and Kitons. I liked the fit of the Zegna's the most and will probably try and describe some of the attributes to the tailor.

Thanks in advance.

$600 for a fully-canvassed MTM suit is not a bad deal. At that price, I would assume you'll be limited in the fabrics you can choose. As a noob, you will just have to do your best to assess the fabrics based on feel. If this is your first nice suit though, you should be more interested in getting a staple color and in a weight that best serves your purposes than in getting the nicest fabric possible. Other considerations you should be able to communicate to the tailor include: buttoning point (you'll probably want it your belly button), width of lapels (most people opt for 3 inches, but you sound like a big guy, so you may want wider), shoulder construction (probably want no padding and minimum structure possible for a canvassed suit since this is your first go-round). I think these are the main concerns. Other things can be addressed after the suit is made, such as slimming the jacket/pants. Understand that your first MTM will not be perfect, and try to enjoy the experience.
