My ex and her sister used it on occasion during a bicycle tour from Seattle to San Francisco. They used warmshowers.org more, as it was better geared toward their needs. Both were fine and they met some good people through it.

She stopped by my place and I gave her a warm shower.
My brother did this when studying abroad in Prague, and living in Cambodia. After 37 total stays, and having 30+ people stay with him, he has nothing but good things to say about it.
For some people I'm sure this is great. For me, it sounds like hell on earth. Staying with strangers and having to chit chat and make nice when you just feel like peacing out and doing your own thing or eating alone. Not my type of deal at all.
My wife and I use it, and it makes for some interesting travels (always nice to have a local who's willing to show you around an unfamiliar place). It allows us to travel much, much more than we would be able to otherwise.
My friend uses it religiously. He really enjoys the company of others from other countries. He tells me stories of meeting new people, giving tours, getting tours, meeting locals. Personally, I enjoy staying in the privacy of our own hotel room.

As I said, I think for some people it's great. I'd rather shoot myself in the balls than spend a whole day touring a foreign country with some guy I just met and I can't just get rid of whenever I want.
