Winter boots for NYC walking

I'll be in NYC during the end of January and need a good pair of winter boots that will be waterproof/resistant enough for the slush but also comfortable enough for prolonged periods of walking. I'm thinking about Bean Boots or their Katahdin boot. I've been told a work boot a la Timberland or Red Wing may be better suited. I might even look at something from Merrell or North Face if comfort needs to be paramount. I'd like to keep it in the $200 range and have little use for boots where I live (the deep South). Any suggestions?

The special sole will give excellent grip on ice, slush and metal surfaces.
