WW Chan shirts: Are you still happy with the quality?

Maybe it's the fabric? Chan only does 100% cotton, perhaps your other non-chan shirts have a synthetic blend in them? I've only dry cleaned my chan shirts and haven't noticed any shrinkage (several years of laundering).

 

 

Honestly I'd try contacting them, and just asking them that^^^. They seem to have a great reputation (on here at least) and seem to do whatever it takes to make the customer happy. As someone who spends a lot of money with them, I'm sure they'd comp you those shirts, especially if maybe they didn't pre-shrink the cotton on them.

Stupid question, but probably worth asking....have you gained any weight? Been working out? That could be an issue as well. But I suppose if your older stuff still fits...:/

Chan doesn't do only 100% cotton. I purchased 3 linen shirts from Chan last week. I think the quality is decent for the price. I certainly wouldn't pay more than $100-150 per shirt from Chan and I don't think the quality comes close to that of more expensive bespoke shirt makers that I've used, but I like the shirts significantly better than comparably priced off the rack, if for no other reason than the variety of choices.

Fusing contributes to the shrinkage issue and certain fabrics are known to shrink more than others. Some non English or italian fabrics shrink about 3/4" regardless and this has to be accounted for in the cutting.

Makes sense - if appropriate, please report here what they say.

I have 5-6 recently purchased (2011) Chan shirts. Most have been washed around 3 times and I have not noticed any shrinking.

Sorry to hijack a thread but didnt want to start a new one. When ordering a suit/ coat from Chan do they charge your card when they send the garment or as soon as they get back from their tour?

ive never had any shrinking issues with my chan shirts.

I've purchased 5 shirts over the years from Chan and no shrinkage whatsoever was noticed. But one of my ascot chang shrank noticeably and sleeves are too short. Anyway, Did they get you new shirts in the end!?

The cotton shrunk. Pure and simple.

This is an example of getting what you pay for. They offer a very attractive price, but in the end the cotton is inferior. It is likely that cheap cotton was used, such as from China or India. The cotton might have looked and felt like the good stuff (from England or Italy or Switzerland), but its shrinkage is remarkable. There is a reason why top grade Italian cotton is expensive.

You do not get this with a Turnbull &Asser shirt. That is because it uses top grade cotton from Albini. In comparison, Chan must be getting job lots. In other words it gets a bolt of blue here, and a bolt of white there depending upon what the jobber is offering on sale.

I used to experience such marked shrinkage from a local shirtmaker. Although he charged Turnbull prices, he bought his cotton from jobbers. He was nice about taking back the shrunken shirts. But after a while, it was more trouble than it was worth.

Furthermore, the quality of the interlining is important. They are probably using the least expensive ones, and the interlining may also be shrinking.

Also, I would not be surprised if Chan subcontracted-out it's shirts. As far as I know, it's a tailoring house.

Based on the foregoing I would streer clear from Chan regarding shirts.

If you want reliability, go to Turnbull & Asser, if you can afford it. Or go to Brooks MTM or Individualized Shirts. They don't buy job lots, and their shirts are pretty consistent regarding shrinkage.

Return the shirts, and apply the credit to some tailored clothing.

I am going to talk to them about some issues with my last shirt order. I feel like they are not the same overall quality -- not a shrinkage issue however...
