YSL fabric?

I'm looking for some fabric for a blazer here in Chile. I stopped by a fabric store and found a 'super 180s' wool fabric made by Yves Saint Laurent (this was all written on the selvage, with the proper logos). They were selling it for about $140 a meter. I've definitely felt much nicer feeling fabric that had a lower super number, but it felt fine. I'd expect super 180s to be extremely delicate, but this didn't feel overly delicate. Does the price sound right? Would I be buying crap?

I never even knew YSL made suiting fabric.

Be careful when buying fabric at places you don't know, believe it or not there are fake fabric. I was in Asia during the summer and found fabrics with random clothing brands on their selvedges.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

The shop looked quite respectable (in the heart of downtown, obviously it had been there for years and there were many salesman there who seemed to know their stuff), so I assumed it was real, but it definitely was surprising to see Yves Saint Laurent on the selvage. It was in the correct logo script too, not in the normal block letters which baffled me. Heck does YSL even make their own suits?

I forgot to mention it also said Made in Italy on the selvage. YSL is French. The only thing I could think of is that they commissioned the fabric from a mill.

Hrmm, looked at YSL's website and it seems they do make suits. Quite expensive ones at that. And they're made in Italy. Could it be that they commissioned the fabric?

YSL may not, but perhaps "Yves Saint Laurant" may.

In all seriousness, I have YSL ties that have been made made in Italy. Not sure about cloth though.

Would a large maker use normal tailor bolts of cloth? Or more those big rolls that feed the automated machines?shog[1].gif

Correct, all YSL suits I have ever owned in the last few years was made in Switzerland by Zegna. I have an old YSL made in Italy suit but it is the Pour Homme line.

It is not unusual for the mill to have the name of the manufacturer or store on the selvege.

E.g.,

a). "Woven exclusively for Brooks Brothers"; or

b). "Woven by Holland & Sherry for Oxxford Clothes".

Sometimes the store or manufacturer wants its name on the cloth for trnk shows.

I think that 180's cloth can be a bit fragile.

Even if YSL commissioned fabric to be woven in italy by a respected mill, I ti doubtfull that YSL would request that the mill include a woven selvage unless the selvage is used as pocket trim.

It is doubtful that there would be so much fabric left over at the end of the season, that the fabric ended up in a fabric store in chile.

most likely Chinese woven fabric

Thanks for all the advice. I also called YSL and left a message. We'll see if they say anything.

edit: YSL couldn't help or even confirm they sell anything outside of their online store. I'll look elsewhere for fabric.
