Lightly Brogued Shoe?

I'm growing more fond of brogued shoes, but I don't want a particularly large pattern (ala the AE Strands). Along those lines, here are some shoes similar to the style I want:

The AE Chestnut Colton (now discontinued)

The AE Augusta

C&J Weymouth

Price point: <$500

Any suggestions?

Interesting shoes. Looking around, the Moore caught my eye the most. They still look like captoes, which I was hoping to avoid -- some toebox brogueing (medallion, maybe?) might be more what I'm looking for.

Anybody else have ideas?

I always liked the C&J Drummond austere wingtip design...only comes in Tan and Black i think, now that they discontinued the beechnut color. How about the C&J Edgeware? Spoo has posted several pics of the shoe

I'd also like to find some wingtips that don't have tons of holes in them. So who makes a bit more subtle wingtips? No longwings please.

For a semi-brogue, I dig the Barker Wallace. Sure, lots of holes but they're still fairly subtle ones and not over the top.

They'll custom color any finish for an additional 50 Euros.

Gdot, what can you tell us about these shoes. They have some gorgeous shoes for a great price. I am especially interested in a pair in the olive patina. I have never heard of this brand so any info. you have would be appreciated. Thanks.

They are fairly well constructed - Goodyear welted, decent leather uppers, haven't seen anything about the leather type they use for the soles. There are a few reviews floating around the web, including one in which they actually disected shoes from various upper end manufacturers. The site I found was in French and my French is not much to brag about - I used Google to translate it which rendered some amusing interpretations.

The upshot of it all was that they were good, but certainly not way up there. Then again, neither is the price. I've not yet seen a pair in real life but I'm betting they are pretty quality equivilant to AE.

The website is a bit less than stellar - but I received a very quick response when I emailed them (in English).

I have a pair on order - will make a post when they arrive.

I'm all ears for your review! Those shoes to which you linked are exactly what I'm looking for.

How did you figure out your size in their last?

Because I ordered a custom patina it will be about a month before they arrive. So we'll have to wait for that review.

As for size I am a US size 8 and have pretty consistently good fits with EU/UK size 7. So that's what I ordered.

If they don't fit to my satisfaction I'll put them up on Buying and Selling - but that's not too likely.

By the way - if you want to buy a really high quality pair in this configuration I recommend the Grant from Gaziano and Girling. I have a pair and they are stellar! Of course quite a bit more expensive.

I've developed a fondness for brogue'ing that doesn't have the ragged edge. I'm not sure if this is what you mean by "less" but, without the edge, it's more sleek than the standard and a lot less dramatic - which might qualify for you.

I got a pair of Church's for Prada in the Fume' leather* similar to this pic that have what I'm talking about:

146

It seems obvious in retrospect, but for a while I couldn't tell why I inherently felt like this was a more "polished" brogue than the standard and why I liked it for that reason. Heck, I'm not even sure that without the ragged edge if it's still even really a brogue.

* yes, lots of people sneer at fume', but I got a great deal and they're for special occasions where I wanted something different, not as a daily business shoe.

How about these Santonis then? No decorative edging but an extra row of stitching here and there to provide some detail.

Not within the OP's originally stated price range - but I couldn't resist posting them.
