Wearing a poppy - Page 3

That's true - mostly due to the fact that it would be lost on the red serge. Some British military wear them on berets as well. But a fedora or a baseball cap is not part of a military uniform and a cavalier wearing of a poppy just seems unseemly.

Veterans Affairs Canada says poppies can be worn from the beginning of the poppy drive, which this year was Oct. 30.

The annual campaign begins "on the last Friday of October and (poppies) can be worn at any time after that date," Veterans Affairs says on its website. But it adds: "Although it is tradition for the poppy to be worn only during the annual Remembrance period, a person may wear a Poppy any time he or she wishes to do so."

More than 1,500 branches of the Royal Canadian Legion started the poppy campaign Friday. The veterans' organization suggests the poppy be worn on the left lapel of a garment or as close to the heart as possible.

Honestly, how bloody difficult is this for you guys?

Left lapel - close to heart.

In Canada the usual place for military and police members to wear their poppies was traditionally on the left side of their hats. As far as I know the RCMP still wear it there, but armed forces members changed to the left lapel (or corresponding location on clothing that has no lapel) ten to fifteen years ago. The usual theory on why is that someone took exception to seeing them poppyless in offices and other circumstances where hats are not normally worn.

It's still fairly common to see poppies worn on hats, even baseball caps, by civilians.

I saw a couple of girls wearing a poppy in their hair today. A nice gesture I thought. If anything, it catches the eye even more than the usual lapel placement, which means you notice it more, which then means you think about the meaning more. In my book, that's a good thing, even if the placement is unconventional.
