Ralph Lauren Blue/Purple Label vs. Mid-prices Brands

I need to buy some winter weight wool pants and unfortunately don't have the time to watch for a good sale. I bought a pair of RL Black Label Wool pants for $495 and a pair of Black Label Corduroys for $350 (still need to get several more pairs). They fit much better than the comparables from Banana Republic , however in my opinion not 3X or 4X better.

Are the RL Black Label/Purple Label worth the money if paying retail? I'm using BR as example of what is available in the mid-price range. Most of the BR clothing I've had in the past have lasted 1 or 2 seasons after which I've got rid off them. If BL/PL is more lasting, style-wise and quality-wise, then I think they are worth the extra money. If I'm just paying for marketing hype, then obviously not.

I'd be interested to hear any other opinions.

I don't think any mass produced wool pants are worth $500. Yes they are nicer quality and will likely have a nicer cut, but I feel that you can get nice enough pants for half that.

Then again, I'm far from a baller by SF standards

IMO, RLPL is definitely not worth the money if paying retail. If you can get them on a steep discount (at least over 50% off MSRP, preferably more), then they may be worth it. Most would also agree that you overpaid for the RLBL trousers at $495 - there are many more options of similar quality garments that are priced way less.

Also, Blue Label and Purple Label are very different in terms of price and quality, for the most part. Blue Label can be had much cheaper that Purple Label, but the quality will usually not be as high.

Are they worth their price tag? Probably not., but they are 3* better than Banana Republic because BR pants are shit.

So what is a good mid-priced alternative at retail pricing?

BB Milano cut trousers? J Crew? Define "mid-priced." Seeing as how you were willing to drop $500 on a pair I'd say Incotex or Mabitex would probably be mid-priced for you...

I buy wool & flannel pants from Sierra Trading Post for half of their retail price.

Wait until edmorel posts some more Panta for sale on the B&S here....those will be priced way below MSRP for RLBL and RLPL and the quality is just as high.

Try Epaulet as well - their price to quality ratio is far better than RLPL IMO.

Or you sort of failed there at comprehension. laugh.gif
I have not been a customer of his but why not give another of our affiliates, Howard Yount, a go? Heard nothing but good things about his pants out side of a select few find them a little on the slim side.

x2

I would think RLBL would be cut pretty slim though, so I would tentatively say he is ok with slim fitting pants nod[1].gif

I also second the edmorel pants recommendation. smile.gif
